Overview
Moving steadily through grass or crossing a dusty safari track, the leopard tortoise carries one of Africa’s most striking shells. Its high, domed carapace is patterned with black, brown and golden markings that resemble the rosettes of a leopard.
The leopard tortoise is one of the largest tortoise species found on mainland Africa. It inhabits open landscapes across eastern and southern Africa, including Tanzania’s savannahs, grasslands and scrub. Adults spend much of the day grazing and browsing, moving slowly between patches of grasses, succulents and other low-growing plants.
Although their progress may appear unhurried, leopard tortoises can cover considerable distances while searching for food, shelter and suitable nesting ground. Seeds often pass through the digestive system intact, making the species an effective seed disperser in some habitats.
Behaviour & How to Identify
Look for a large tortoise with a strongly domed shell and bold dark markings over a yellow, tan or cream background. Younger individuals often have especially clear patterns, while older tortoises may become darker or more muted with age.
The powerful, column-like legs are covered in thick scales and well suited to walking across rough, dry ground. Unlike some tortoises, leopard tortoises do not usually dig deep permanent burrows, although they may shelter beneath shrubs, in shallow scrapes or inside abandoned animal burrows.
During the breeding season, males follow females and may compete with one another by ramming and attempting to overturn rivals. Females dig nests in the soil and may lay several clutches of hard-shelled eggs during a breeding season.
Interesting facts
Their shell pattern changes as they age. Young leopard tortoises usually have bold, sharply defined markings that may become darker and less distinct over time.
They sometimes consume bones, dung or ash. This unusual behaviour may provide minerals such as calcium that support shell growth and egg production.
They help disperse seeds. Many swallowed seeds pass through the digestive tract intact and are deposited elsewhere with natural fertiliser.
