Overview
Light-footed and low to the ground, the common genet moves almost silently through grass, scrub and woodland, often glimpsed only as a flash of spots and a long, ringed tail.
Despite its cat-like face and movements, the common genet is not a cat. It belongs to the Viverridae family, alongside civets. Its slender body, short legs and flexible spine allow it to move easily through dense vegetation, while its sharp claws make it an agile and confident climber.
Common genets are opportunistic hunters and foragers. They feed mainly on rodents, birds, reptiles and insects, but may also take eggs, amphibians and fruit. They are mostly active at night and spend the day concealed in dense vegetation, hollow trees, rocky crevices or other sheltered resting places.
Behaviour & How to Identify
Look for a small, slender carnivore with a pointed muzzle, prominent ears and a greyish or yellow-brown coat covered in rows of dark spots. The long tail is marked with alternating pale and dark rings and is often almost as long as the body.
Common genets are mainly solitary. Individuals maintain overlapping home ranges and communicate through scent marking, calls and regularly used latrine sites. They usually hunt alone, moving close to the ground while listening and watching for small prey.
Genets sometimes appear near lodges, camps and human settlements, where insects, rodents or food scraps may provide easy feeding opportunities. However, they remain wary wild animals and should not be encouraged or fed.
Interesting facts
Their long tails act as balancing tools. A genet can move confidently along branches and leap between trees while using its ringed tail to steady its body.
They can squeeze through surprisingly narrow spaces. Their slim bodies and flexible spines allow them to pass through dense undergrowth and small openings while pursuing prey or escaping danger.
They use scent to communicate without meeting. Scent marks and shared latrine sites can reveal an animal’s presence, reproductive condition and territory to other genets.
