Overview
Solitary, secretive and scented in mystery, the African civet is one of Tanzania’s most distinctive nocturnal mammals. Its bold black-and-white markings, dark facial mask and banded tail may appear cat-like, but it is not a cat. It belongs to the Viverridae family, alongside other civets and genets.
African civets are adaptable omnivores, eating everything from fruit and insects to rodents, reptiles, eggs and carrion. They usually emerge after dark and move quietly along familiar paths between feeding areas and daytime resting places. Although widespread across much of sub-Saharan Africa, their secretive behaviour makes a wild sighting feel particularly special.
African civets are also known for producing a powerful musky secretion commonly called civet. This substance was historically valued as a perfume ingredient and scent fixative, although its collection involved keeping wild civets in captivity and raised serious animal-welfare concerns.
Behaviour & How to Identify
Look for a stocky, low-slung body, pointed face, rounded ears and a long tail marked with dark bands. The coat varies from pale grey to cream, covered with irregular black patches and stripes. A dark facial mask surrounds the eyes, while a short mane runs along the back and can be raised when the civet feels alarmed, making it appear larger.
African civets are mainly nocturnal and usually spend the daytime concealed in dense vegetation. They are solitary outside the breeding season and rely heavily on scent to communicate. Individuals mark prominent objects with secretions from glands beneath the tail and repeatedly deposit dung in communal latrine sites.
Their diet is unusually varied. Alongside fruit, insects and small animals, African civets can consume millipedes, strongly scented carrion and certain foods that many other mammals avoid. Rather than using their paws to catch prey, they usually seize it with their teeth.

African civets use communal latrines known as 'civetries'. These regularly used dung sites carry scent information that helps individuals communicate without meeting face to face.
